Points of Pride: Athletics

Exactly one winning school in the history of the Southwest Preparatory Conference’s Athletic Directors’ Cup has been what is now called a “3A” school. Before the official designation of “3A,” schools with an enrollment of 150-200 upper school students of a single gender regularly competed for a championship with schools of 250-350 upper school boys or girls. When Fort Worth Country Day won Division I Championships in any sports in the days before 3A/4A, the accomplishment was particularly remarkable. We were defeating schools with sometimes twice as many students as ours.
The creation of a distinction in 3A and 4A, along with the introduction of separate season-ending championships to be played against like-sized schools, meant that schools like Fort Worth Country Day would no longer win an occasional, one-off championship. We can now enter most every season in most every sport, girls and boys, knowing we have a chance of winning a 3A Championship.
What is remarkable in this new era of SPC is the notion that a small school like ours was able, in 2024-25, to do so well across all of our boys’ sports, to have accumulated the absolute best school-year record of any of the 16 schools that field boys’ teams. That accomplishment means, for the 2025-26 school year, we hold the highly coveted Athletic Directors’ Cup for Boys SPC Teams. We will be flying that banner out on Bryant Irvin. Not everyone will know precisely the level of that accomplishment, but anyone reading this article will. Take a picture of that banner and be proud of our athletes and their coaches.
While the Directors’ Cup we hold this year is just for our boys’ teams’ successes last year, please see this fabulous collection of accolades on our girls and boys teams that Leigh Block, Athletic Director, curates for our website. FWCD strives for excellence across the 3A’s of academics, arts and athletics. That excellence shows up in a variety of ways. For athletics, we can point to some very clear metrics to support our pride in Falcon athletics.
