Saving Migrating Birds: FWCD Joining Forces with the Carter Foundation to Help Migrating Birds
In 2015, Debra and I rented an apartment for our first year in Fort Worth. In renting that space, we did what Cindy Allen, the long-time Executive Assistant to the Head of School, strongly recommended: live close to school. Proximity was our first priority. We lucked into apartments on the Trinity Trail near FWCD. When it came time to move to a house, we had become hooked on the trail. We were especially smitten by the birds in the trail’s most wooded spots. In our house search, we were again lucky to land, for the last 10 years, near those woods.
The songs of the many birds in our neighborhood are a gift. We can’t have our windows and sliding glass doors open too long, especially at dawn. We are enchanted.
I loved learning last week that Fort Worth is a leader in preventing unnecessary deaths among the migrating birds that enchant us so much. The Amon G. Carter Foundation has done important work with the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and other organizations, particularly focusing on spring and fall migrations. You will see “yard signs” in our carpool areas at school inviting you to participate in turning off lights at home to minimize collisions and reduce the more than 1 billion bird deaths resulting from crashes into buildings each year.
