On Saturday, February 21, FWCD’s Latin Clubs hosted the Texas State Junior Classical League Area C Convention, bringing more than 500 DFW-area Latin students and their teachers to campus for a day of competition and fun. Blake Wood ’27 served as this year’s student chairperson. Leading FWCD’s Latin Clubs in hosting academic, athletic and artistic events during the day -- everything from Latin grammar to ancient geography, photography to costumes, and basketball to a catapult competition.

Latin Teachers Clint Hagen (Middle School) and Bryan Carlson (Upper School) would also like to thank all of the parents and faculty who volunteered to help during the day. “We are especially grateful to Middle School Science Teacher Victoria Bergman, who organized and deployed volunteers during the day,” they said, “and to Monica Wood, who headed up our parent volunteers and organized concessions.”

College professors Teres Danze (University of Dallas), Simon Burris (Baylor University), Sean Gurd (The University of Texas at Austin), Stephanie Murphy (University of North Texas), and Bob Cape (Austin College) judged the competitions. Cape and Gurd also led academic colloquia (Classical Myth and History in Recent Science Fiction and Ancient Greek Music: A Practical Introduction) on their areas of specialization.
