FWCD’s Parent Faculty Association awarded Director of Fine Arts Lindy Heath and Middle School Theater Teacher Sarah Slaughter Hughes ’96 with the February 2026 Falcon Wings honor. Falcon Wings recognize PFA volunteers, FWCD teachers or staff who soar above and beyond the call of duty to enhance PFA programs or events or have improved the greater FWCD community by their dedication and enthusiasm. A book was donated to the library in her honor.
Allison Cobb, Falcon Wings Chair, shared the following at the February 23 17 PFA meeting.
We have very special Falcon Wings to share with you this month. These FWCD faculty members believed in the Middle School theatre students the way Buddy believes in Christmas spirit. Thank you for giving them a vision to follow, a story worth telling, and a process full of heart and spirit. We could not ask for better leaders.
Many thanks to Mrs. Hughes for working with students of all talents. Whether students can sing with perfect pitch or need a little help hitting that note, she makes students feel seen and included. As parents, we loved cheering for all the performers in Elf Jr. The Musical. She allows students to freely explore art and theatre, providing new opportunities for self-expression. Philosophically, she truly embodies what Plato espoused to be the good teacher: ‘Education is not what some people declare it to be, namely, putting knowledge into souls that lack it … Rather, education is the art of turning the soul in the right direction.’
In addition, we are deeply grateful to Ms. Heath for bringing the Middle School musical back to FWCD! Through her dedication and encouragement, students were given the chance to discover their talents, build confidence, and experience the joy of working together in Elf, Jr.
