On November 8, Owen Campbell ’29, Andrew Lobo ’26, Catherine Zhang ’29, and Upper School Latin Teacher Bryan Carlson attended the University of Dallas’ inaugural Antiquity Day event, celebrated as the Ludi Plebeii in honor of the Roman festival held at this same time in ancient Rome. The event cultivated an interdisciplinary and inclusive approach to classical topics, showcasing how the material of Classics touches upon so many areas of study that appeal to our students.

The students participated in lectures, games and activities, including an exam testing their knowledge of Classical languages and civilization; an interactive demonstration of Gladiatorial combat; a demonstration of a full-sized battle catapult; and stage productions of classical and classically inspired scenes in UD’s Orpheion Theater.

Lobo immersed himself in all of the activities. After winning the Latin translation competition, he dressed in gladiatorial gear and took on the training with sword and shield before completing a sparring activity with other students under the direction of their Prima Rudis (gladiator trainer). Later, he assisted the team in operating and firing an authentic trebuchet that towered over 20 feet.

“Andrew is a great example of FWCD seniors setting an excellent example for our freshmen and taking full advantage of the varied experiences that we offer students in the Upper School,” Carlson said.
