In July, Latin students Nat Angel ’28, Aaron Bagshahi ’29, Samuel Lim ’30, Andrew Lobo ’26, Hudson Parcells ’28 and Blake Wood ’27 traveled with Middle School Latin Teacher Clint Hagen to Knoxville, Tennessee, to participate in the National Junior Classical League Convention. The NJCL is an organization for students of Latin, ancient Greek, and the ancient Mediterranean world. Students stayed in dorms at the University of Tennessee and enjoyed competition and fellowship with students from across the country and a few from outside the country. Altogether, the five students who competed placed in the top 20 in at least one contest, and three students finished in the top 10. (Lobo arrived late because he was competing in the Solar Car Challenge.) Individual award winners were:

Aaron Bagshahi ’29: Essay (fourth)

Samuel Lim ’30: Greek Derivatives (fifth), Reading Comprehension (ninth), Roman History (10th), Discus (third) and Shot Put (fifth)

Blake Wood ’27: Greek Derivatives (sixth) and Latin Vocabulary (10th)

Two FWCD students are currently serving on the executive board of the Texas State Junior Classical League and helped lead the Texas delegation during the week. Lobo is the Treasurer, and Wood is the Area Chairperson for the DFW area. Hagen currently serves as one of the state co-chairs for TSJCL.
