The Falcons soared in Winter SPC, which took place in Houston on February 8-10. The girls basketball team etched their name in glory as SPC 3A Champions, the boys soccer team clinched the Runner-Up title in a hard-fought battle, and the girls soccer team nabbed third place. Not to be outdone, the swim team made waves, securing 18 total medals and shattering records. Emily Nelson ’27 and Chloe Nelson ’27 won gold in the 200 Freestyle and 100 Breaststroke, respectively. The wrestling team had standout performances from Joseph Brunson ’25, who earned the SPC title for the second year in a row, and Thomas Bluntzer ’27, Corbin Harrell ’25, Michael Head ’27, Broadie Prigel ’27 and Luke Tierce ’24 finished third in their weight classes.

“Our awesome cheerleading team set the tone for the end of our winter season by putting on an amazing pep rally before our Battle of Bryant Irvin games,” said Leigh Block, Director of Athletics. “Then our basketball, soccer, wrestling and swim teams represented FWCD exceedingly well in Houston. I’m proud of our student-athletes and coaches and grateful for our community’s support of these hard-working teams.” 

Boys Basketball

The Falcons finished fifth in the SPC 3A Tournament. After a heartbreaking last-second loss to The Oakridge School, the team rallied to beat The Awty International School (55-45) and Trinity Valley School (40-26). Canaan Factor ’26 averaged 11.7 points and 16.3 rebounds over the three games. John David Hart ’26  scored 14 points in the Awty win, and Jabari Griffin ’25 scored 14 in the TVS win.

Girls Basketball

The girls basketball team is the SPC 3A Champion! The Falcons went 3-0 with a quarterfinal win over TVS (47-39), a semifinal win over St. Stephen’s Episcopal School (47-43), and a dominating effort in the championship game to beat St. Andrew’s Episcopal School (45-20).  

Boys Soccer

A fantastic season came to a close for the boys soccer team, who earned SPC Runner-Up accolades in a close game against Cistercian Preparatory School (1-0) in the SPC Championship. The Falcons won the quarterfinal matchup vs. St. Stephen’s, 8-0. Luke Vincent ’26 and David Yun ’24 scored two goals each. Truman Roth ’24, Dario Rosas ’25, Oliver Kelly ’26 and Harrison Johns ’25 all scored once. Roth scored a hat trick in the 3-0 semifinal win over TVS.

Girls Soccer

Girls soccer ended their season with a third-place finish in the SPC Tournament. The Falcons beat St. Andrew’s (4-0)  in the quarterfinal but came up short against TVS in the semifinal (2-0). They bounced back with a 2-1 victory over The John Cooper School to secure third place.

Swimming

Girls swimming finished runner-up in the SPC 3A meet. The team won 18 medals combined. Emily Nelson ’27 won gold in the 100 Butterfly and set a new School record in the 200 Freestyle, and Chloe Nelson ’27 won gold in the 100 Breaststroke, setting a new School record in the process. Belle Xu ’24, Murphy Hoefer ’25, Emily, and Chloe placed second in the 200 Medley Relay. The boys 200 Medley and 400 Freestyle Relay teams placed fourth. In total, the swim team broke five School records this season. 

Wrestling

The Falcons placed fourth overall at the SPC meet. Eight wrestlers placed in their weight class. Joseph Brunson ’25 won an SPC title for the second. Thomas Bluntzer ’27, Corbin Harrell ’25, Michael Head ’27, Broadie Prigel ’27 and Luke Tierce ’24 each had third-place finishes in their weight classes. Matthew O’Brien ’24 and Alex Parsons ’26 placed fourth.
