Community Service Points of Pride

FWCD eighth-graders gave back to the Fort Worth community in a big way by dispersing $9,000 in funding to 11 local nonprofit organizations. The check presentation ceremony on Thursday, February 10, concluded the Falcons for Fort Worth program, a community service and philanthropic learning project developed to instill the values of philanthropy in today’s students. The program focuses on the values of generosity, involvement and responsibility—all character qualities that students carry with them for a lifetime.

The Once Upon a Time Foundation granted $100 per student for disbursement in the Falcons for Fort Worth program. Mirroring the role of a nonprofit grants committee, the students learned about the local nonprofits through representatives who visited campus during the fall semester. During the presentations, students posed questions to better understand the various agencies’ inner-workings. This is the 11th year FWCD eighth-graders have participated in this interactive, real-world learning program.

“I personally believe that Falcons for Fort Worth provides an important opportunity for our students because it teachers them every step of the nonprofit process while also educating them about being good stewards of the funds that will impact various people in the Fort Worth community,” said Lynnette Burleson, Falcons for Fort Worth Advisor. “The program truly encourages these young people the importance of giving back to the community and hopefully encourages future philanthropic endeavors.”

This year, the eighth-graders awarded the following agencies:

  • Alzheimer’s Association: $300
  • Airpower Foundation: $300
  • The Welman Project: $400
  • Academy 4: $400
  • Meals on Wheels: $500
  • A Wish With Wings: $500
  • Don’t Forget to Feed Me: $800
  • Gill Children’s Services: $1,000
  • Hope Center for Autism: $1,200
  • Union Gospel Mission: $1,700
  • Boys and Girls Club of Greater Tarrant County: $1,900
