New Doctor in the Middle School

There’s a new doctor in the FWCD family! Middle School Health and Wellness Counselor Kathryn Sohne successfully defended her dissertation in March to earn a Doctor of Philosophy in Family Studies from Texas Woman’s University. Her dissertation is a qualitative study titled The School Counselor's Role in Facilitating Parent-Adolescent Communication.
“This particular degree appealed to me since it emphasized research and teaching in family science — the scientific study of families and interpersonal relationships,” Dr. Sohne noted. “ I plan to continue researching parent-adolescent interpersonal processes, adolescent issues, and the impact of mental health practitioners in school settings to improve my practice and inform others. I will continue guest teaching and presenting for student programs at TWU.”
Some fun (though maybe not so fun to Dr. Sohne!) facts:
  • She completed her PhD in four years; her entire dissertation was during the pandemic.
  • Dr. Sohne took mostly evening, Saturdays and summer classes.
  • Due to the pandemic, she had to conduct her  study virtually. “This was cool because I got participants from multiple states,” she said.
Dr. Sohne will walk — or rather drive up — for graduation on Friday, May 7, at Texas Motor Speedway. Her mother will get to hood her.
