About Students Teaching Students

At Breakthrough, we believe in the model of “students teaching students” to educate, engage and inspire young people to achieve their academic and career goals. We recruit and train outstanding high school and college students from top schools, both locally and across the nation, to serve as teaching fellows in our summer and school- year programs.

These young teaching fellows bring an incredible amount of energy and passion to their classrooms, and they stand as role models for our young people. Guided by instructional coaches (professional educators) and our summer and school-year curricula, teaching fellows integrate lesson plans, effective classroom management and their overall energy to provide our students with rigorous academic content. In each step, teaching fellows are never alone. They receive an intensive two-week training and ongoing guidance, feedback and evaluation from professional educators throughout the entire program.

Breakthrough’s pre-professional teaching residency is the only one of its kind, and it is highly selective. It has been ranked by the Princeton Review as a top 10 internship along with the White House, Google and MTV.
