Senior Sings Her Way to First Place at NATS

Kathleen Clum won the Dallas/Fort Worth Chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Competition on March 23. She competed in the Musical Theater Category with 64 other singers. This was Kat’s fourth year to sing in this competition. Last week, she performed in the Upper School Talent Show.
“I am always singing,” Kat said. “It’s part of what makes me ‘Kat.” I love watching musical productions and listening to music. I sing and make vocal recordings in my spare time and even enjoy making songs apply to my coursework at FWCD.”
Outside of choir at FWCD, Kat works with Voice Instructor Laura Stevenson. “I have prepared for the competitions throughout my four years of high school,” she said. “Together, we [Stevenson] choose three songs for each competition, taking into consideration songs from the musical theater productions and musicals I have attended or watched. Ms. [Melodee] Halbach and Joe Westermann [’19] have also been instrumental in helping me along this journey.”
This year, in the preliminary round, Kat sang “Say the Word,” from The Unauthorized Biography of Samantha Brown. The three judges then selected Kat’s second song: “I Get a Kick Out of You” from Anything Goes.
“This year’s win was the culmination of four years of hard work and dedication. While I may have a busy schedule, I can always count on music to alleviate stress,” Kat said. “And really, I am always singing. My goal this year was to win. The competition has accomplished performers from both private and large public schools in DFW.”
Kat will attend Brown University in the fall and play softball. Brown’s open curriculum will allow her to obtain a concentration in business as well as to pursue course work in musical theater.
