Middle School Teacher Jackie Rains has served the School incredibly well the last six years as English Department Chair, overseeing curriculum mapping, hiring and mentoring several new teachers, aligning the grading standards across the 5-12 grade levels, and leading important discussions on the alignment of research skills with the History Department and grammar skills within the English Department. As Chair, Jackie also oversees the FWCD PSAT Study Skills Course, which she will continue to direct. This academic year, she became seventh-grade team leader, a role that she loves because it allows her to work closely with her grade-level team. Let this note serve as a huge thank you to Jackie for her wonderful contributions to the English Department as well as an announcement of Catherine’s new responsibilities.
With Jackie’s decision to step down from the Chair position, the School invited current members of the department to apply and to share their suggestions for the department’s next leader. Division Heads and Brad Philipson were involved in the interviewing and decision-making process.
A member of the School community since 2004, Catherine has earned the respect of colleagues and students over her years at FWCD and brings great strengths to her new position. A highly successful teacher of 10th- and 11th-grade English classes, a big fan and supporter of our wonderful Writing Center, and a valued part of the always energized conversation among our faculty, Catherine brings a great esteem for her colleagues, a passion for excellence, and a bright mind eager to represent and lead the department in the years ahead. Jackie’s de facto Upper School lieutenant for some time now, Catherine has already taken to working K-12, becoming a highly motivated student of the Lower and Middle Schools. Expect her to eagerly jump into all aspects of the all-school role starting this spring.
Thanks to Jackie for her wonderful leadership and commitment to the department and congratulations to Catherine on stepping into an important role helping steer FWCD kindergarten through 12th-grade student experiences as developing readers, writers and critical thinkers.
