Birthday Party Patterns

FWCD Lower School Learning Specialist Teresa Hoppe authored the article “Birthday Party Patterns,” which is featured in the current issue of Teaching Children Mathematics. The Birthday Party Pattern problem incorporates mathematical representations, patterns and sense making to foster students’ algebraic reasoning. Hoppe implemented the problem with a group of nine FWCD second-graders with whom she worked weekly on problem solving and extensions of the mathematics being studied in class. Read more here.
