Theatre Playwrights Earn Accolades

Three FWCD playwrights will soon see their plays brought to life on stage! The students’ plays were chosen for the Neighborhood Play Festival to be produced by Stage West in the Festival of the Kid this May. The following students were selected:
  • Joe Westermann ’19 for Center: A Dance With Words
  • Chloe Gilpin ’19 for Plastic Family
  • Finn Connor ’18 for Three
For the Neighborhood Play Contest, Connor, Gilpin and Westermann each penned a short play (10-15 pages), a poem/narrative or monologue (up to two pages, preferably about a life event) for the 2017 Festival of the Kid. The festival is an opportunity to let kids and teens share their experiences through the use of creative writing and character development. Connor wrote his in his Playwriting class; he is applying to a summer program at NYU Tisch School of Arts for screenwriting. Both Gilpin and Westermann authored their plays in their Acting One class.

The 2017 Festival of the Kid will take place on the evenings of May 8, 9 and 10. Performance times are still to be determined. This one-of-a-kind play festival uses the top 17 winning entries from Stage West’s annual Neighborhood Play Contest and stages them during this three-day festival. Plays are cast using teens from the North Texas area. They are then professionally produced using seasoned designers and directors.
