College Counseling Workshop for Junior Parents and Guardians on August 29

The College Counseling Office invites parents and guardians of the Class of 2028 to attend the Junior Parent and Guardian College Counseling Workshop from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 29, in the Lou and Nick Martin Campus Center.

Kimberly West, Director for National Recruitment in the Office of Admissions & Recruitment at The University of Oklahoma, is the featured guest speaker. West will offer insights and advice that apply broadly to the college admission process rather than to any single institution. 

The program also will include a panel of FWCD parents who have recently navigated the college admission process.

To make the most of the day’s programming, participants are encouraged to bring a fully charged laptop or iPad.

Originally from Houston, Texas, West earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Oklahoma. She has dedicated her entire professional career to the university.

Over the years, she has served the university in a variety of roles, including recruiting students from numerous Oklahoma City-area schools, coordinating African American Student Life, and overseeing recruitment throughout North Texas. In her current position, West directs OU’s out-of-state recruitment efforts, supervising a team of 14 Admission Counselors across the continental U.S.

An active member of the Texas Association for College Admission Counseling (TACAC), West served as the association’s President (2024-25) and continues to contribute her leadership and expertise to advancing both the organization and the college admission counseling profession.

The workshop will help parents and guardians better understand their role and their student’s role in a successful college search and application process. Through the expertise of our guest speakers and guidance from FWCD’s College Counselors, participants will gain a clear understanding of what to expect as students navigate the important milestones of the junior year.

The program also will introduce families to the College Counseling Class and Scoir, FWCD’s new web-based college planning and application platform.

The day’s sessions, along with opportunities for questions and conversation, will provide valuable insight for families who are new to the college admission process as well as those whose older children have already graduated from FWCD.
