    Keeping FWCD Safe: Meet FWCD’s Fort Worth Off-Duty Police Officers

    A police presence on the Fort Worth Country Day campus is not new. Fort Worth Police Officer Mike Kuzenka joined the FWCD community in 2015 to provide a presence and oversee some evening events on campus. In 2017, FWCD added additional officers under Officer Kuzenka’s command to further ensure community safety. Over the years, the faces have changed but the presence of FWPD Officers remains and is welcomed by students, faculty, staff, and visitors to campus.

    FWCD and Jason Witten: What’s the Connection?

    With football teams across the country dealing with a lack of helmets and shoulder pads from various vendors related to supply chain issues and materials challenges due to the ongoing pandemic, FWCD came in to lend a hand. Through a mutual colleague, Head Athletic Trainer Ed Chisholm and Jason Witten, former Dallas Cowboys tight end and now Head Football Coach at Liberty Christian School in Argyle, connected. FWCD had an excess of equipment and was able to sell some to Liberty Christian so they could safely field their team. In this instance, #FWCDTogether made an impact well beyond itself.

    Recycling Day at FWCD

    The Technology Department celebrated Earth Day on April 23 by recycling three pallets worth, a ton or more in weight, of broken and unusable FWCD electronics. Dr. Steve Uhr, Director of Technology; Andy Beasley, Network Administrator; and Aaron Lowe, Technology Specialist, sorted through various electronics -- computers, printers, scanners, TVs, cables and phones -- to clear out about 18 months worth of broken equipment. The pallets were picked up by Commodity Recycling Solutions, Inc.

Middle School Health and Wellness Counselor Kathryn Sohne successfully defended her dissertation in March to earn a Doctor of Philosophy in Family Studies from Texas Woman’s University. Her dissertation is a qualitative study titled The School Counselor's Role in Facilitating Parent-Adolescent Communication.

    To celebrate Fort Worth Country Day’s birthday, members of the School community put together the 2021 Founders' Day video. Founders’ Day commemorates FWCD’s incorporation: March 6, 1962. Faculty members arranged time to view the video with students in their homerooms or advisories, and staff members watched when they had a short break. The video features FWCD's faculty/staff service recognition in intervals of five years, Club Viginti Induction (for 20 years of service), and some fun with a few familiar faces.

    FWCD’s Athletic Department earned the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) Safe Sports School Award — 1st Team for the third consecutive period. FWCD was the first Southwest Preparatory Conference (SPC) school to earn this recognition when the award was first designated in 2014 and has earned the award every cycle since.

    FWCD’s Community Hero

    For anyone who doesn’t already know it, FWCD Nurse Lori McCormack is a superhero. Now, she’s being elevated to community hero status … 70 times over … by the second-grade class. View the slideshow. Traditionally, this interdisciplinary project, which integrates visual arts, language arts, and social studies, allows second-grade students to celebrate everyday heroes in the community. Students select their community members and conduct interviews to better understand and connect with their heroes’ work. The art comes in when students photograph and then paint their heroes’ portraits. The final project showcases the community heroes’ stories through the students’ eyes.

FWCD’s Science Department, some Breakthrough Fort Worth friends, Raul Frias Perez ’20, John’s parents, Judy (former Upper School Science Teacher) and Andy Cordell (former FWCD Science Department Chair); John’s wife, Sarah, and other TCU doctoral students were present via Zoom on March 10, for his dissertation defense on the role passion plays in the teaching of science.

    Falcon Wings Honors

    This academic year, FWCD’s Parent Faculty Association awarded Ann Bluntzer, Sunnie Sellers, Rachel Werner and Lori McCormack, RN, with the Falcon Wings honor. Falcon Wings recognize PFA volunteers, FWCD teachers or staff who soar above and beyond the call of duty to enhance PFA programs or events, or have improved the greater FWCD community by their dedication and enthusiasm.     FWCD’s Health and Wellness Counselors, Theresa Fuss (Lower School), Kathryn Sohne (Middle School) and Kathy Roemer (Upper School), hosted an impressive weeklong virtual Parent/Guardian Support Series in early February. Each presentation drew anywhere from 15 parents/guardians to 65. The counselors’ commitment to FWCD’s health and well-being has been quite focused on pandemic-related stressors and tips and tricks for maintaining wellness.
